Friends, regardless of your political leanings or affiliation, this should concern all of us.
The FBI Director, James Comey just recommended charges against Hillary Clinton be dropped. He then explains how serious the offenses were, that any reasonable person would have known better, that it put our national security at risk, that the evidence is that she did do it...
…and then he recommends that the matter be dropped. Move along, move along... there is nothing to see here.
Oh, but before he closes, he warns us that if you or I did the same thing, we would be prosecuted! But she gets a "pass" because... well, he never really explains the "why."
Think I exaggerate? Take a look at the
official press release
A few points from the Comey / FBI statement that particularly bothered me :
1- He begins by explaining that if she did it,
"either intentionally or in a grossly negligent way", that it would have been in "
violation of a federal statute making it a felony".
This is a rather serious accusation.
2- Then he outlines that she
DID in fact do it.
"...there is evidence that they were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information."
3- He clarifies that this
does rise to the level of "
gross negligence" not just a minor oversight. Anyone worth of public trust should have known better.
"any reasonable person in Secretary Clinton’s position...should have known that an unclassified system was no place for that conversation."
4- It gets worse. Not only did her negligence open us to possible national security risks, but it is possible that our enemies might have exposed that risk and gained access to critical classified information!
"...it is possible that hostile actors gained access to Secretary Clinton’s personal e-mail account."
5- Next
he points out that some public official are above the law. You or I would have been prosecuted and probably gone to jail if we did the same.
Yes, he actually says that!
"To be clear, this is not to suggest that in similar circumstances, a person who engaged in this activity would face no consequences. To the contrary, those individuals are often subject to security or administrative sanctions. But that is not what we are deciding now."
6- But why does she get a "pass" when other would not? He doesn't say. He just says that no reasonable prosecutor would go after her in this.
"Although there is evidence of potential violations of the statutes regarding the handling of classified information, our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case."
So let me get this straight. She committed a felony that created a national security breach that may have been exposed by our enemies,
But no "reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case."
Really?
Do we really think it is OK to elect a person to run our nation and lead our military (and even give her they key to our nuclear arsenal) when she has demonstrated that she lacks judgment in matters that any reasonable official should understand?
Even more important: No matter what your political views are, do we accept that the "Elite" are above the law - immune from prosecution for felonies committed? If we are OK with that, then we will get the government we deserve.
Well.. at least we know where we stand with these people.
